re:Invent 2016 – IoT and Financial Competencies Visit AWS Partners Amazon Web Services (AWS), this week announced two new competencies in its AWS Partner Network. The company announced the new AWS Financial Services and AWS IoT competencies during Tuesday’s Global Partner Summit in Las Vegas. This event marks the start of the AWS reInvent conference for this year. In a blog post, Kate Miller, senior content manager at the APN, stated that the AWS IoT Competency showcases AWS Consulting and Technology Partners who have proven technology and/or implementation abilities for a variety use cases, including smart factories, smart cities and energy. Partners who are eligible for the IoT Competency will receive marketing materials and branding materials, a “AWS IoT Competency Partner” designation in the AWS Partner Solutions Finder directory (also released Tuesday), and “preferred access” to funding for market development. AWS may also include them in promotional materials and events. There are four types of partners in the IoT Competency.

re:Invent 2016 – AWS Supersizes its Snowball Data Transfer Appliance Amazon Web Services CEO Andy Jassy capped his re-Invent keynote Wednesday by rolling a 45-foot long truck onstage. He said, “Introducing AWS Snowmobile.” Snowmobile is the bigger brother to Snowball, AWS’ briefcase-sized data transfer device that was unveiled last year at the re:Invent conference. Snowball was created for organizations that need to move terabytes of data from their on-premises systems to the AWS cloud. Jassy explained that Snowmobile is for moving exabytes. AWS will connect the container to the customer’s network using the included cable. The customer will then be able to transfer their on-premises data to the Snowmobile and drive it back to AWS facilities. Jassy stated that it would take 26 years to move an exabyte worth of data from any location on the planet, including the cloud. It would take you less than six months to move 10 Snowmobiles. At Wednesday’s keynote, Jassy also introduced Snowmobile. The Snowball Edge, which costs $300, is a larger and more feature-richer version of Snowball. It is equipped with storage, compute, clustering, and storage capabilities. It also has four times the speed and twice the capacity of the original. “We are thrilled to introduce AWS Snowball Edge. This hybrid edge device is a true hybrid. It allows customers to transport 100TB of data in less time than a week. Snowball Edge also allows them to transfer data back-and-forth between the Snowball Edge and Amazon S3, to cluster Snowballs in an on-premises storage pool and to process data on the premises before shipping the Snowball Edge back back to AWS,” stated Bill Vass, vice president for Storage Services at AWS.

re:Invent 2016, AWS Makes Virtual Private Servers Simpler with Lightsail Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), announced that developers can create virtual private servers (VPSs) using the new Amazon Lightsail. This was revealed at the company’s ongoing re-Invent 2016 conference. The company stated that developers can jumpstart AWS projects using VPS with just a few clicks by clicking configuration options for compute storage, networking, and storage. These options are available in five pricing plans, ranging from $5 to $82 per month, depending on how much RAM, processing speed, SSD storage capacity, and data transfer allowances. The new offering supports Amazon Linux OSes and Ubuntu OSes. It also supports applications such as WordPress, Magento Drupal, Joomla! Redmine and Node.js; and computing stacks such as Node.js and GitLab, LAMP and MEAN, Nginx, and Redmine. Lightsail provides a quick and easy way to get started with AWS compute services. However, it also allows for flexibility for developers to connect to other AWS services like managed databases (RDS, DynamoDB), CloudFront content delivery network, S3 object storage, and many more. AWS spokesperson Jeff Barr stated that Lightsail was the best way to get started with AWS and jumpstart cloud projects. He also gave a clear path into the future. AWS Launches Shield Service To Protect Cloud Applications From DDoS Attacks AWS Shield was launched at the AWS reInvent conference in Las Vegas on Thursday. It protects Web sites and applications against DDoS attacks that can be applied to them. During Thursday’s keynote on IT transformation, Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels introduced AWS Shield. Vogels highlighted the growing prevalence of DDoS attacks in developers as one driver for change. Developers must adapt their development processes and testing methods to ensure their users’ security. Vogels stated that AWS created AWS Shield to assist developers in this process. Vogels stated that AWS’ top priority is to “protect you at all cost.” “This is our No. “This is our No. 1 priority and will always be our No. 1 priority.” AWS Shield is available in two flavors: Advanced and Standard. AWS Shield Standard is a free service that is available to all customers. It is activated by default for Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53, and AWS Elastic Load Balancencing. According to this FAQ, it protects against Layer 3 and 4 infrastructure attacks such as UDP floods and State exhaustion attacks such as TCP SYN floodings. AWS WAF [Web Application Firewall] can be used by customers to protect themselves against Application layer attacks such as HTTP POST and GET floods. AWS customers who have Enterprise Support or Business Support plans can only access the Advanced version. Prices start at $3,000 per monthly. This higher-end version offers more advanced features such as continuous network traffic monitoring and 24-hour access AWS’ DDoS Response Team to protect the network layers and applications. “AWS Shield Advanced manages mitigation for layer 3 and 4 DDoS attacks. This means that your Web applications are protected against attacks such as TCP SYN floods or UDP Floods. You can also use AWS WAF to apply mitigations to your application layer (layer 7), or you can contact the 24X7 AWS DDoS Response team…who can create rules for you to mitigate Layer 7 DDoS attacks. re:Invent 2016 – AWS Intros Visual Workflows For Distributed Apps A new tool that Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), introduced today at its reInvent 2016 conference, allows for visual workflows to build distributed applications without any coding. AWS Step Functions allows developers to connect different Web services and microservices to create complex distributed applications for use cases like document and data processing, DevOps and Web apps. For example, setting up a processing pipeline for photo uploads. It allows developers to use familiar tools and libraries to create robust apps that can scale as required in a cost-effective way, according the company. Jeff Barr, AWS spokesperson, wrote today that you can coordinate components of your app as a series of steps in a visual workflow. To specify and execute the steps in your application at scale, you can create state machines in Step Functions Console. “Each state machine defines a set states and the transitions between them. You can activate states sequentially or in parallel. Step Functions will ensure that all parallel states run smoothly before you move forward. States do work, make decisions and control the state machine’s progress. The product documentation states that the tool automatically starts, tracks and retries each step. Log information is also provided to help troubleshoot problems. Applications execute in the expected order. Pre-built blueprints for common workflows are available to help you coordinate your app components into the aforementioned sequential or parallel steps. The product’s website states that “AWS Step Functions makes modifying workflows and editing the sequence of steps easy without having to revise the entire application.” You can reuse components and steps without having to modify their code, allowing you to innovate faster and experiment with new ideas. Your workflow can accommodate thousands of components and steps so you can build more complex applications. A FAQ explains why AWS Step Functions should replace the Amazon Simple Queue Service. The FAQ states that AWS Step Functions should be considered if you need to coordinate service components for the development of highly scalable, auditable applications. If you need a reliable, highly-scalable, hosted queue to send, store, and receive messages between services, [SQS] is a good option. Step Functions tracks all events and tasks in an application. Amazon SQS requires that you implement your own application-level tracking, especially when your application uses multiple queues.
